Work Brief
Modification and renewal of public building access areas to conform with changes to the Disability Discrimination Act at sites including Dean Street, Eldon Square Shopping Centre and Eldon Gardens car parks, West Road Crematorium and Raby Street Youth Centre in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Description of Works
Working on public buildings such as car parks, schools, youth centres and a crematorium, the works involved the installation and modification of 45mmØ plastic coated handrails to staircases, ramps and access areas.
Some projects involved the removal of redundant handrails and replacing with compliant alternatives. Some of the larger contracts involved the modification of existing handrailing to give a DDA compliant, as well as a cost effective solution.
Unique Project Features
- Working closely with Atkins Architects at pre-tender to support the composition of a cost effective and workable design solution for each project.
- Working on open public buildings to overcome health and safety issues, closedown periods for schools and youth centres, as well as having to work in sensitive areas (crematorium).
- Researching issues to enable us to provide DDA compliant solutions to design briefs.
- Modifying existing stainless steel by welding stainless spigots to existing toprails and bolting plastic coated tubular handrails.
